 CURRENT THEORY TEST 
From 30th April 2009 ....

The Driving Standards Agency has increased the Theory Test Questions from 35 to 50 multiple choice. The reason for the increase is to develop higher standards and road safety. The new time allowed for the Theory Questions is 57 minutes. The new pass mark is 43 out of 50.

The fee has increased from £30.00 to £31.00

The Hazard Perception Test remains unchanged at this time.
 SHOW ME / TELL ME QUESTIONS 
Car Tests-Safety Check questions and answers for car tests. (Show me / Tell me) The source material is to be found in the DSA publications "Driving the Essential Skills"and "The Official DSA Driving Tests". Advice and information on how to carry out vehicle safety checks can also be found in the manufacturer's handbook.


Q1   Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Open the bonnet, identify dipstick /oil level indicator, describe how to check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.
Q2   Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Open the bonnet, identify minimum and maximum markers on header tank and describe how to top up to correct level.
Q3   Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the washer level.
Open the bonnet, identify windscreen washer reservoir and explain how to check the level and top up weekly.
Q4   Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of brake fluid.
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and check the level between minimum and maximum markers.
Q5   Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how pressures should be checked.
Manufacturer's recommended guide in the handbook. Use reliable gauge, check and adjust the pressures when the tyres are, not forgetting the spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
Q6   Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensire that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A minimum of 1.6mm depth of tread all the way across and around the tyre. There should be no lumps, bumps or cuts and bulges in the tyre.
Q7   Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before going on a journey.
The footbrake should not feel too soft and spongy. Brakes should be tested as you set off and the vehicle should not pull to one side.
Q8   Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Turn the headlight switch on. Now tell me. (don't go round car)
Q9   Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted to the rigid part of the heat restraint is a least as high as the eyes or tops of the ears, and as lose to the head as is comfortable. NB. Some restraints may not be adjustable.
Q10   Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
Warning light on the dashboard should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
Q11   Explain to me how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
If the sterring becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Drive forwards and turn the steering wheel. The wheel should turn noticeably with you and shouldn't feel heavy.
Q12   Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I can assist you). If you need to switch the ignition on, please don't start the engine.
Check handbrake / neutral. With ignition on, apply the footbrake, make use of garage doors, windows etc., or ask someone to help. As this is now a show me question the examiner may check the brake lights for you. If you need to switch on the ignition first sit in the car. Check handbrake / neutral. Turn ignition until the lights come on the dashboard. DO NOT START THE ENGINE.
Q13   Show me how you would check that all of the direction indicators are working
Switch on the indicators or hazard warning lights and go around the vehicle to check that all the indicators are working. Don't touch the ignition.
Q14   Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
Press horn button.
Q15   Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep control over the vehicle. This is now show me.
Apply the footbrake. Demonstrate by releasing and re-applying the handbrake, so that when the lever is fully applied that it secures itself and does now come up to the end of its working travel.
Q16   Show me how you would clean the windscreen by using the windscreen washers and wipers.
Check handbrake / neutral. Turn the ignition until the lights come on the dashboard. Operate the wash/wipe control. Do not start the engine.
Q17   Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the windows effectively. This would include front and rear screens.
Check handbrake / neutral. Turn the ignition until the lights come on the dashboard. Set all relevant controls including fan, temperature, air direction/source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. Do not start the engine.
Q18   Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them. Do not start the engine.
Check the handbrake / neutral. Turn the ignition until the lights come on the dashboard. Turn on dipped headlights. Then turn on rear fog lights. Check rear fog lights warning switch is on in the dashboard. Fog lights should only be used when visibility is less than 100 metres.
Q19   Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped beam to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car.
Check handbrake / neutral. Turn the igintion until lights come on the dashboard. Turn on the head lights. Switch to main beam. Check main beam warning light in dashboard.


Two questions from the show me / tell me list will be used at the beginning of the test.
