| To tow a trailer or caravan you may now need to have a TOWING TEST ........ | |
If you passed your car driving test after January 1997, you may now need to pass a separate test (licence category B + E) to tow a trailer or caravan weighing over 750kg M.A.M. (Maximum Authorised Mass). For full details of the regulations visit ...Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency |

| Most horse/cattle trailers and caravans weigh more than this. Even if your own combination is within Category B, we would advise anyone towing them to consider some instruction. | |

The Towing Test includes an off-road reverse manoeuvre, a controlled stop, uncoupling and coupling and driving on the road. The test is based on the LGV driving test, it currently costs £89.00 and lasts for approximately one hour. |
| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - About towing | ||
| I passed my driving test in a manual vehicle but now have an automatic car to tow my caravan. If I take the towing test in my automatic, will I be able to tow using a manual vehicle in future? | ||
| No! You will only be able to tow using an automatic vehicle. However, if you pass the towing test in a manual vehicle, you may tow with either. | ||

| My daughter has just passed her driving test. Can she now tow our trailer on her own? | ||
| Possibly, but we would advise anyone (especially new drivers) towing anything more than a small trailer to seek some training. Additionally, if the M.A.M. of the trailer is more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, or the combination is more than 3.5 tonnes, her category B licence becomes a provisional licence for the car and trailer (licence categories B + E). Then, just like when she was learning to drive, she can only tow the trailer in the company of someone qualified to do so, and must show L plates. | ||
| Should she get professional training before taking the towing test? | ||
| There is no legal requirement to do so, but in view of the high cost of the towing test, you will want her to pass first time. | ||
| Could we avoid all this by buying a medium sized goods vehicle? | ||
| No! As you passed your test before January 1997 you can drive a vehicle up to 7.5 Tonnes (7500kg). However, your daughter's new category B licence only covers vehicles up to 3.5 Tonnes. To drive a larger vehicle she would have to pass a test for medium sized goods vehicles (category C1) and she would still not get the category B + E entitlement! | ||
