How to apply for the test ...
You cannot apply for a driving test until you have passed your Theory Test - you will be asked for confirmation of this. Make sure you have a car available on the test date.

Choosing a date and time ...

We advise you to agree a choice of suitable date and times with your instructor, and get him or her to book the test for you. That way the timing can be fitted in with their diary - you will need your instructor and their car on the day!

Don't forget - YOU have to provide a car for the driving test! Make sure your instructor and car are available before booking a test.

How to apply for the test ....
Book by telephone

If you have a debit or credit card, the best way to book your practical test is by telephone (see telephone system below for numbers) - it means you can choose the exact date and time. You will also need your driver number (on your provisional driving licence), your Theory Test Certificate number and a pen & paper to write down your booking reference number and other details. It is also best if you have an idea of which test centre you wish to take your practical test at - talk to your instructor about what he or she thinks.

The DSA has a telephone answering system for TEST BOOKING and GENERAL ENQUIRIES. Below are directions through the FAST TRACK telephone system to book a theory test ...

The telephone number for ALL BOOKINGS is ...

When telephoning to book my test, what will I be asked?

You will be asked:

= what type of vehicle the test is for (e.g. manual or automatic).
= for your driver number, name, address and phone number.
= where and when you want to take the test (ask what choice you have).
= your theory pass certificate number.
= whether you have any special needs (e.g. wheelchair access) or any form of reading/writing difficulty (e.g. dyslexia, deafness). Assistance will be made available for you if possible. Whether you will be accompanied by an interpreter.

Applicants needing an interpreter/translator can get details of registered organisations by telephoning 0300 200 1122 (or 0300 200 1133 for Welsh speakers). You have to find such a person before the actual test booking can be made, and pay their fees as well as the test fee.

Alternative ways to book your test ...

ON THE INTERNET

You can now book your test on the internet at ...www.dsa.gov.uk/tests/online_booking_1.asp

Click on the link above and choose the 'book a test' item in the Practical Test menu. The system will take you through the booking system step-by-step and then ask for payment. You can pay with most debit and credit cards.

BY POST

If you don't have a debit or credit card yourself, you could ask a friend, relation or your driving instructor to book the test for you using their card.

Failing that, you can obtain a postal application form from your local driving test centre or from your driving instructor, and pay by cheque or postal order. Booking this way means you will be allocated a test date and time which might not be convenient for you. However, once you have a booking, you can change it over the telephone.

If you have trouble getting an application form you can ask for one to be posted to you by telephoning 0300 200 1122.
