DRIVING ON THE ROAD > Getting a provisional licence

You need a provisional licence before you can start learning to drive on UK roads. This section explains to you how to get one.

THE FORMS
D1	Get a copy of form D1 Application for a driving licence and Form D750 Application for a photocard licence from a post office, and complete all relevant sections. Enclose your fee (£29.00) and send it off to DVLA, Swansea. The full address is shown on the application forms.	D750

HIGHWAY CODE ....

You can order a Highway Code (price £1.49p) with an application for your first provisional licence.

You really must have a copy of the Highway Code. It's the learner driver's bible!

WHEN and HOW LONG ?
Allow at least 3 weeks for your licence to arrive, longer if your medical history will need to be checked by the DVLA. You can apply for your licence up to 2 months before its start date.

REMEMBER ....

You cannot drive until you receive your licence, and you must sign it before driving.

Advice from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) about driving licences is contained in form D100, available from major post offices. You can also telephone the Customer Enquiries Unit at DVLA on 0870 240 0009 between 08.00 and 20.30 Monday to Friday and 08.00 to 17.30 on Saturday. If you need to write to DVLA, the address is DVLA, Swansea, SA6 7JL.
