Driving on the Road - Part 1
You must have a driving licence before you can start learning to drive on UK roads. This section tells you what you need to know about driving licences and how to get further help if required.

Driving licences are issued in the UK by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). As a learner driver, the type of licence you need is called a "provisional licence".

To apply for any driving licence, including a provisional one, you need two forms - D1 Application for a driving licence and D750 Application for a photocard licence, available together at most post offices. You cannot legally drive on public roads until you have received your provisional licence.

You can ride a moped from 16 years of age. Most other vehicle categories, including cars, require you to be 17 years of age.
SUPERVISOR ....
To drive a car on a provisional licence you must be accompanied by a supervisor who is at least 21 years old and has had a full British car licence for at least 3 years.

Your physical and mental health must be good. You are required to declare details of your health on form D1 when you apply for a driving licence.

If any aspect of your health causes concern, you will be sent a medical questionnaire, which asks for your permission for the DVLA to contact your doctor and/or medical specialists and obtain details of your condition.

EYESIGHT ....

Your eyesight must be good enough to read a standard UK vehicle number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet). If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses to do this, they must always be worn when you drive.

RELOCATED TO UK ?

If you have relocated to the UK and have a full driving licence it is possible that you can exchange it for a full UK driving licence depending on which country the licence was issued from.

Advice from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) about driving licences is contained in form D100, available from major post offices.
You can also telephone the Customer Enquiries Unit at DVLA on 0870 240 0009 between 08.00 and 20.30 Monday to Friday and 08.00 to 17.30 on Saturday. If you need to write to DVLA, the address is DVLA, Swansea, SA6 7JL.
