INTRODUCTION OF THE SHOW ME, TELL ME QUESTIONS
September 2003
Vehicle Safety Checks For The Driving Test
Candidates will now be asked two questions at the start of the practical test, one 'show me' and one 'tell me'. The show me, tell me questions cover the basic knowledge and safety checks that drivers should understand and regularly carry out to ensure their vehicle is safe for use. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one minor driving fault being recorded. The article (linked below) gives more information on what questions you are likely to be asked ....

INTRODUCTION OF THE HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST
Many learner drivers are concerned about the new Hazard Perception test due to be introduced during Autumn 2002. This test will be taken at the same time as the theory test. The test will show candidates various video clips filmed from a car, with each clip containing one or more developing hazards. You will be marked on your reaction time to the developing hazard rather than answers to specific questions. The article (linked below) gives more information and contains answers to the questions we are most frequently asked concerning the introduction of the Hazard Perception test ....

DRIVING AGE UP FROM 17 TO 18 ?

           COMPUTERISED THEORY TEST
Since the 4 January 2000, anyone taking the Driving Theory Test answers the questions using a computer touch screen system rather than a paper-based test as previously. You also now get your results before you leave the test centre rather than waiting for them to arrive by post. For further details see our Theory and Practical Tests section.

   CHANGES TO THE PRACTICAL
DRIVING TEST

Since 4 May 1999, the following changes to the practical driving test came into operation.
  • The test is about seven minutes longer than previously.
  • Test routes are longer and more realistic, including where possible, more single and dual carriageway roads outside 30 mph limits.
  • The reverse parking manoeuvre may take place off-road at the test centre.
  • Candidates fail for making more than 15 minor driving faults.
  • There is improved written feedback after the test.
The revised test sets higher standards for candidates' driving and checks they are prepared for the pressures of busy congested roads and fast-moving traffic. Statistics show that new drivers are twice as likely to have accidents than more experienced drivers.

   NEW DRIVERS ON PROBATION
The Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995 came into force on 1 June 1997. The new Act means that drivers who tot up six or more penalty points on their licence, within two years of passing their driving test will be forced to become learners again. They will then have to display 'L' plates once more and be accompanied by an experienced driver until they re-pass both the theory test and practical driving test.

The two year 'probationary period' will begin on the day the first driving test is passed. Drivers who already hold a full licence for one category of vehicle will not be affected if they pass a test in an additional category.
